OLS

Students responsibility regarding homework:
  • Record homework assignments in Assignment Books
  • Ask questions when necessary to clarify the assignment
  • Hand in, on time, neat and accurate assignments
  • Complete homework assigned during an absence
Teachers, students and parents are expected to familiarize themselves with the school Homework Policy.

Purpose:
Homework is a link between the student's in and away from school. We believe that all homework should be meaningful to the student's academic progress.

Homework is not a form of punishment, and will not be used to punish students. At Our Lady of Sorrows-Seton Campus, homework will be assigned to:
  • Reinforce learned concepts
  • Assess a student's proficiency with the subject matter
  • Prepare a student for teacher designed testes and New York State Assessments
  • Prepare a student for future lessons
  • Develop writing skills
  • Develop problem solving skills
  • Develop critical thinking skills
  • Develop an appreciation for lifelong learning
Length of Homework:
Homework in 1st through 3rd Grade is generally assigned two to four times a week, generally Monday to Thursday. Homework will not generally be assigned for long weekends or during vacation. In grades 4 through 8 homework may be assigned four to five times a week depending on the subject. The figures below represent the average total amount of time a typical student should spend daily on homework in a week:

Grade K 5 min plus an additional minimum of 10 minutes of being read to
Grade 1 10 minutes plus an additional minimum of 10 minutes of being read to
Grade 2 10 minutes plus an additional minimum of 10 minutes of being read to
Grade 3 30 minutes plus an additional 10 minutes of reading
Grade 4 40 minutes plus an additional 15 minutes of reading
Grade 5 50 minutes plus an additional 15 minutes of reading
Grade 6 1 hour per night plus an additional 20 minutes of reading
Grade 7 1 - 1.5 hours per night plus an additional 20 minutes of reading
Grade 8 1 - 1.5 hours per night plus an additional 20 minutes of reading

Additional time may be required to complete extended projects. In grades 5 though 8, students are given time during the SSR period at the end of the day to work on homework. In some cases homework will be studying for tests. Teachers in grades 5 through 8 do not always assign homework on the night following exams in their particular subject. Homework assignments can be checked using the student's Assignment Book or on the school website Homework Page (Grades 3 - 8).
